The words of the country’s national anthem “here every creed and race find an equal place” ring true in Trinidad with its large population of persons who claim African, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese and European descent. The island is one of tolerance and respect for other persons’ customs and beliefs and all religions are treated with equal importance.
Having never been reliant on tourism for its income, the island is struggling to promote itself and its features, vast though they are and there remain many opportunities for tours, hiking groups, gastronomy and eco-tourism as well as the usual Caribbean offering of sun, sea and sand.
By far the biggest tourist attraction is the annual carnival celebration, held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The Ministry of Tourism revealed that over 41,000 visitors came by air for Carnival in 2024, spending about $9.3 million while on the island. There are also are huge numbers of other attractions to discover on one of the greener islands of the Caribbean.
